17 Blue Head Coach
Toney Cummer began his coaching career in 1998 at Lansing Eastern High School. Currently, he is the Head Coach at Chelsea High School, a position he assumed in 2023. In addition to his role at Chelsea High School, Toney has been a National Level Coach at HVVC since 2021. He has served as the Head Trainer for the 14u, 15u, and 16u teams and has led various national level teams to numerous championships. Notably, his 15u team won the USAV Asics Navy Pier National Championship and the Lake Erie Power League Championship in 2023, while his 14u team secured the AAU State Championship in 2022. During his tenure, his teams have achieved 15 tournament championships and multiple top 5 finishes in national tournaments at the Club and Premier Level.
Prior to his current positions, Toney had a successful career at Ann Arbor Huron High School from 2002 to 2023. He took over as Head Coach in 2007. During this period, he was named the MIVCA Region Coach of the Year 4 times in 2012, 2015, 2017, and 2021. During his tenure, his teams were MHSAA District Champions five times and reached the MHSAA Regional Finals 4 times. In 2012, they advanced to the MHSAA Quarterfinals. Toney has played a crucial role in developing players who have gone on to achieve success at the next level, with numerous athletes placed in college programs in all divisions including the Big Ten, Big East, and Missouri Valley Conferences. Over the years he has worked as a Camp Coach at several Colleges and Clubs throughout the Midwest and USAV’s High Performance Program.
Toney is a member of the AVCA’s Victory Club after surpassing 700 Career wins in 2024. He currently sits at 36th all-time in career wins and 12th among active coaches in MHSAA History.
